So often in the US we see foreign comments about us which are clearly so jaded they do not warrant any sort of response. Often these comments come from anti-Globalists or Anti-American groups and they use our negative news against us. In fact they recite the worst of it and embellish it and then trash the USA in online Blogs. Well here is one right back at them;

President Bush and his administration along with the US Military has prevented WW III by going into Iraq. Now unfortunately we see we have another issue in Iran, which must be dealt with for the future of mankind. So we must rise to that occasion.

You anti-everything bloggers are stating poll numbers which sway like the wind based on mass media content information overload of the human mind in the living rooms of America. TV is not reality, well I know that is an obvious statement, but really in the over all scheme of things, it is not even close.

You bloggers are so anti-American, anti-globilist, anti-World Bank, Anti-Western World. You are pro-Terrorist nation state sponsor, pro-nuclear detonation in Israel, pro-insurgency in Iraq killing US Troops, pro-Iranian fanatic fundamentalism. And you are trying to convince a “Blue Blood American” that the United States of America is to blame for the World’s ills?

Give me a break, have you taken a look lately at the corruption of the vocal political opponents of the United States, Western Democracy and liberty and freedom for all peoples? Bringing the World together in a common cause, why are you supporting those who oppose this and continue to carrying on in their acts of terror and violence? Take that you anti-USA blogging scoundrels from hell!

Marketing Via Messageboards & E-mail Discussion Lists - An Alternative View

One of the most suggested means of getting traffic to a site in the early stages is to get involved in messageboard and e-mail discussions on your topic of choice. The idea is that you can show your expertise and therefore get traffic to your site via your signature file (most discussion lists allow you to include your signature file with your post - a few lines with your name, site address and maybe a very brief description). Whilst this is a valid tip, I don’t believe that the real reason for why you should do this has been investigated far enough previously.

Firstly, if you post an ad for your site on a discussion list, your are spamming and will create a bit of a fiasco. This does not make good business sense. So, the way to do it is to look for people asking questions and answer them. The issue here is your reasons for doing this. If your reason is purely to drive traffic to your site, you probably won’t be terribly successful and, sometimes, people will work out what you are up to. Therefore, your goal should be to be seen as an expert in your field, not to get traffic to your site.

Even if you don’t include a signature with your posts, you can still make a name for yourself and, in the long term, this will prove to be a far more profitable approach. I have visited many discussion lists in my time and it is easy to see the people that have gained respect. From a business point of view, they are the ones who will benefit from this approach, not the people who post simple answers to try to get an immediate effect.

Your goal must always be to achieve success in your online venture and your personal credibility will play a major role in this. So, when looking at marketing on messageboards and in E-mail discussion lists, establishing your credentials as an expert in your field must be your number one priority, not short term traffic generation methods.

Promoting in Online Forums

Forums can be a useful tool if you`re doing business online. You can learn a lot by reading the content and actively taking part in the discussions. Reading a forum’s archives can be a great way to get a basic knowledge about a topic, and it can also give you pointers about the changes in trends and opinions through time.

It is always very important to read the terms and conditions of each particular forum for a basic guideline as to what is acceptable. It`s also a good idea to read archived posts in order to see the guidelines in action. If you don`t, you could end up doing something wrong, like spamming the forum, and that could seriously hurt both your name and your business.

Taking an active part in forums can help you gain recognition in topics you show some knowledge of, and may even result in some great business leads and contacts. Read through posts, and answer any questions you are able to in a polite, friendly and helpful manner. It`s a brilliant way to get your name and services known, but you have to be aware that different forums have different rules in regards to self-promotion.

Some won`t allow any hint of self-promotion, some are specifically aimed at self-promotion, and a lot of them fall somewhere in between, allowing either signature files or URL’s to an off-the-page member profile. The in-between ones are the best ones to use for marketing yourself, especially as the ones aimed at promoting usually end up more like “spam boards” than anything else.

See if you can choose forums that allow a sig file, which is basically a short block of text about you and/or your services which can be automatically attached to the end of every post you make. No matter what you do, never EVER post a reply to a ‘legitimate’ topic with nothing but spam in the body of your post. This will annoy forum members who are seeking valid answers, and kill your credibility as an online marketer almost instantly.

“Netiquette” is a must-have if you`re planning to use forums. What is netiquette, you ask? Basically the same as offline etiquette. It is essential to have a good understanding of acceptable ways to communicate with other forum members. That`s why it`s so important to do a LOT of reading in the forums before you start posting messages yourself.

This is where good moderators come into play. They check the forums for inappropriate posts and spam, they keep the boards clean, and make sure everybody plays by the rules. Forums without moderators tend to turn into ghost-towns, with nothing but spam bots visiting them. A nice clean board needs good moderators to keep it that way.

In the worst-case scenario, if you break the rules in a forum, by maybe spamming, or using inappropriate language or behaviour, either the administrators or moderators may well end up banning you from that particular forum. If that happens, they will most likely delete each and every post you`ve made, whether it`s good or bad.

Be Awesome in Social Media

In order to market effectively and be awesome at social media, you need to know where your customers are hanging out and what they are interseted in. You wouldn’t advertise your retirement planning service on Facebook, would you? If people are already gathering in one specific place, say Twitter or LinkedIn, wouldn’t it be smart to market in the space they occupy.

Setting up social media profiles is easy. In most cases, you just offer up your name and email address. Establishing a rock solid presence in social media is the hard part. You’ll have to invest some time into learning the best practices. But did you know that you can actually put ads and classifieds in lots of the social networks?

After you figure out which social networks to attack and set everything up in your profiles, you’re going to want to start moving people onto your ‘leads lists.’

This might sound easy to do, but it’s the most tricky. The last thing you want is to sound spammy or post all kinds of self-promotional links. That’s the easiest way of getting unfollowed and unfriended.

One ratio I like to use is 7-to-1. That’s seven messages or links per every one self promotional link. I’ve tested many variations and versions and 7-to-1 seems to work well.

Now, with your new leads in your sales funnel, sell to them as you normally do! In time, your new social leads will start to convert into clients. Remember though, social media followers are a bit more finicky than real leads. Expect your conversion rates to drop a little.

Lessons from the Wedding Mafia

One of my clients shared a story with me from his networking group, a chapter of BNI. Ivan Misner, the creator of BNI talks about what he calls “contact spheres”.

Here’s how it works: A group of related business owners work together to get referrals for each other. Here are some of Misner’s examples of contact spheres:

*Business services: printers, graphic artists, specialty advertising agents and marketing consultants.

*Real estate services: residential and commercial agents, escrow companies, title companies and mortgage brokers.

*Contractors: painters, carpenters, plumbers, landscapers, electricians and interior designers.

*Healthcare: chiropractors, physical therapists, acupuncturists and nutritionists.

*Weddings: the caterer, the florist, the photographer and the travel agent.

The story my client told me was about the last group which has been dubbed “The Wedding Mafia”. When one gets new wedding business, the whole group gets new wedding business. It makes it very difficult for anyone else to get referrals. It’s a tremendous business builder. I have a client in real estate who does this very well also. It’s one of the most powerful business building tools ever.

So, my client and I were joking around about me developing a “Small Business Mafia”a small business consultant, an insurance agent, a financial planner, a printing company, an office supply company, a tax preparer, etc. The more we joked about it, the more powerful an idea I realized it was. And since I do business both locally and nationally, I could form numerous branches of my Small Business Mafia and then (insert evil laughter) I could CONQUER THE WORLD!!!

Whooooaaaaa! Hold on. The key to success of any referral group like this is finding good people. The business owners you work with have to be people you feel completely comfortable in referring your valued clients to. Otherwise, your name and reputation will get dragged into the ditch. Once you’ve found people you love to refer, be sure they’re very familiar with your business and the types of clients you’re looking for. Give the group as much or as little structure as needed to ensure that referrals are flowing both ways. Then, go out and conquer as much of the world as you want.
