In a recent European Tournament, Phil Hellmuth made a beautiful and unprecedented play against JC Tran that has several of the internet poker forums buzzing with discussion and dissection of the why and how. Hellmuth’s comments are as follows:

So we have the why, it was instincts, but how. How could such a call be justified? Keep reading, reader. Hellmuth had a 5d 8d in his hand. The board read 8c Ad 4c Ks 2c. That’s three clubs on the board so a flush is there if Tran is sitting on clubs. And Tran moves all in. Let’s take a look at how in the world Hellmuth ended up making that poker call.

First let’s look at the bad, then the ugly, then finally the good.

The bad obviously is that Hellmuth is sitting on only a pair of 8’s. He missed his straight possibilities. Missed his flush possibilities. And has a low pair with a horrible kicker.

The Ugly is that he sitting on a middle pair with two overs, the A and the K, on the board, and there are straight possibilities that even though he missed his opponent may have hit, and the ever impending flush. There’s even the remote possibility of two pair 2’s and 4’s that could beat his 8.

So what’s the good here. It can only be one thing. The fact that Tran waited until the very end to go all in. What Tran ended up having was a 5-2, pairing his deuce on the end and making an aggressive all-in raise. It could have been a slow play, or it could have been a stab at the pot in hopes that Hellmuth was totally bluffing. But the fact that the all in came only after the river card was shown, is, though not heavily, advisory enough to give Hellmuth a reason to trust he had the hand beat. Call it serendipity, call it luck, or call it subconscious cue pick-up, it was pure gold and a hell of a poker play by Hellmuth.

In online poker, when flopping a big hand you really only have three choices to make. You either slow play it or you bet or you bet big. While it’s a relatively simple concept, it’s often one of those moments where the player has a hard time deciding what to do. In this article, we’re going to take a look at recent WSOP bracelet winner Joe Voertmann, and his concept for playing these types of hands. In a recent hand at the WSOP, Voertmann drew pocket 10s; the blinds were at 50-100 and he was in middle position. The player before him limped in, and, upon seeing his hand, he raised to 425, just over 4x the big blind. At this point the hand wasn’t ridiculously strong, but a pair of 10s is still a decent hand. The limper called.

The flop comes 10-4-3 rainbow suits. Now he’s looking at trips, with a pretty good flop (no high cards to put him off his trips). He’s fully confident here, so staying true to smart poker play, he makes a continuation bet of 600. That’s about 2/3 the pot. “I though if he has anything, a pair of 5s or 6s, he wouldn’t care about the size of the bet and would call me,” Voertmann commented.

The turns comes Ace of clubs, putting two clubs on the board. Voertmann was more than happy for this card. If the limper was calling with a Ace, this is the card he’s looking for to keep him in the hand, even though the pair wouldn’t beat the trips. Again, the limper checks. Vortmann puts forward another continuation bet, doubling his 600 with 1200, which at this point was just over half the pot. Voertmann was walking a fine line, he had to carefully craft his poker betting to not overbet, but to still bet big enough to extract the maximum amount of money from his opponent. Again, the limper called.

Three clubs on the board; this puts up a bit of a predicament for Voertmann to think about, because now the board has a potential flush showing. Again, the limper checked. Now is time for the decision. With the way the player has been betting (checking then calling), it’s probably safe to bet he’s only sitting on a high pair. Probably pocket kings or queens, maybe AK. So, Voertmann decides to make a value bet of 3000. “I made a value bet […] because I didn’t expect him to have the flush. He called and mucks when I showed my trips.”
