Fall Decor

There is no other time of year that I like better then the Fall. The kids all go back to school, I get my house cleaned out the way that I want it, and the colors inside and out just warm my spirit. This is also the time of year when I put away all the popping summertime colors in the house and bring out my old time pottery. I love the transition in our house and I love the general feel that the colors and earthenware add to the season. I think that this is the best time of year and my house is a cozy place to get ready for winter.

I ran a simple search on the internet for old time pottery and there was so much more information out there than I ever imagined. I thought that I would learn all about the different civilizations that had and created pieces but now it seems like this medium is a large retail sector in the modern world. There are entire chain stores specifically designed to sell home decor made out or replicated based on the pottery of yesterday and the original designs. Who knew that it would make such a profound comeback and bring the world full circle in regards to art and function.

The Easy Way to Make a Special Present

We all know someone who is difficult to buy a present for. Someone who has everything they need and would not appreciate ‘normal’ gifts. Often this will be your parent or an older relative or neighbor, and they can be a problem to buy something for.

Well, this is a simple way to make a unique gift that they will be happy to accept. When you take the time to produce something that relates only to them and their interests it will always be happily received.

The idea is to make a picture that includes something that they are especially interested in. This could be a hobby or any other interest they have.

This is a quick and easy technique. You simply choose your theme (their hobby or interest), paint a silhouette of it onto a colored background and frame it.

You could paint a colored background onto a canvas panel or use already colored paper. I noticed my local art store had colored card that had a range of colors merging into each other, this would be ideal for this technique.

The theme of your silhouette is really the creative part. The easiest thing would be to use their hobby as the theme.

Look through some copyright free clip art until you find an image that you could use for the outline of the silhouette.

If they like fishing it could be a fisherman/fish/fishing fly. For a golfer it could be a set of clubs/golf hole with flag. For someone who likes to cook it could be related to cooking. If they are keen church-goers a silhouette of their church may be appreciated.

A lot of people like to receive a silhouette of their home. For car enthusiast a silhouette of their car is a good idea. In which case you could use a digital camera and take a picture of their church, home or whatever you have decided to include in the picture.

You really can use your imagination for this. When using clip art you have a huge range of options (probably too many!) to choose from. You don’t have to be great at drawing!

Also, you can use a computer graphics package to blend together two or three images for your final silhouette shape. Be sure to adjust the size of the final image to make it the correct size for the painting surface you have chosen, and print it out. As this is a gift you can make it whatever size you choose.

Once you have painted or found a suitable background, then trace around the outside edge of the image for your silhouette shape. Use carbon paper for this.

The silhouette shape can be painted in using acrylic paints - don’t make the paint too thin though! Another alternative is to use a permanent marker, not a normal marker as it will fade over time, and that would be disappointing for the person receiving the gift.

Silhouettes look very effective and traditional in black. However you could use a darker shade of one of the colors in the background for an alternative look. For example if the background was a pale green the silhouette could be in a dark green. This all adds to the uniqueness of your gift.

If you are using a colored card it will be better to use a permanent marker as the water in the paint may cause the card surface to buckle.

Fill in the silhouette shape and leave to dry. Then frame the silhouette picture.

**A distinctive gift for a special person.**

This type of personalized gift is always appreciated and shows that you have put some thought, time and effort into the present.

Another major benefit is that no one else will be giving exactly the same gift!

This is an excellent technique if you can’t find a suitable card. You can make your own special card. It is most effective if you choose a very simple shape for the silhouette when using this method in card making. Cards are generally a lot smaller and look best when you use less detailed shapes.

Use this system and say goodbye to gift buying problems for that hard to please someone.

How to Paint a Model Airplane

Once the basic structure of your model airplane is completed, it’s time to think about painting.

Types of Paint

Model paints are generally of two types: (oil-based) enamels, or aqueous (water-based) acrylic lacquers. The hobby enamels thin with mineral spirits, dry slowly and harden to a high-gloss finish. The hobby acrylics thin with water or alcohol, dry faster, and clean up easier. Never mix enamel with acrylic, and make sure that you use the correct type of thinner.

Brush

The paintbrush is the simplest method of applying paint. You’ll need a broad flat brush for large area coverage, a medium diameter round brush for general use, and a fine-point brush for the smallest detail.
The keys to getting a smooth paint job are:

  • Use a clean brush.
  • Do not overlap brush strokes. Don’t paint over an area with wet paint. If needed, let the paint dry, then apply a second coat.
  • Use a brush with soft bristles, sable is best.
  • For a wide area, use a wide brush to minimize the number of strokes.
  • Keep dried paint particles out of your paint bottle. Use a straw or disposable dropper when transferring paint.
  • For acrylic paints, try adding a small amount of thinner, or acrylic paint retarder.
  • Practice on scrap plastic before painting your model kit.

After using the brush, clean up immediately with the recommended thinner.

Spray Can

The spray paint can is also commonly used for model kits. The spray can:

  • Delivers a smoother paint job with no brush marks.
  • Is faster than brushing.
  • Requires less cleanup.

However, paint cans deliver a wide area spray and so are somewhat wasteful and more expensive. Also, there is a limited range of colors available, and it’s not possible to custom-mix colors. For multiple colors on a model, masking must be done to limit over-spray. The cans will cool down as they are used, which reduces the paint flow. Place the can in warm water for a few minutes to fix this.

Despite their drawbacks, spray cans can be very handy, e.g. for single colors such as model car bodies. Testors spray enamels and Tamiya spray lacquers are popular choices.

Airbrush

The airbrush is the most versatile tool for painting small scale models. When used with a compressor as the air source, it behaves as a very large spray can, while also allowing control of the pressure and of the amount of paint. The airbrush can be used to used to create fine lines of paint and many other useful effects.
Some basic tips:

  • A single action airbrush is simpler, easier to learn, and generally lower cost. However, the double action gives you more control over the paint job.
  • A compressor will be cheaper in the long run than using cans of compressed air.
  • Use the paint maker’s recommended thinner. This will keep the paint flowing smoothly without drying too fast.
  • Follow the instructions for cleaning, to keep the airbrush working properly.

A Father’s Legacy: From Earth to Heaven

From the time I was a young boy
I always liked my dad
He taught me to work and play ball
And with dad coaching the team
Our championship team beat them all.
If we weren’t at a ball game together
We were working together at the job site
Dad you’re alright!
You not only won my heart
But you’ve got the respect of my friends too!
And now we’ve got to wait
To get to heaven to see you
But as for me, while I’m here on earth
I’m going to keep you within my heart
And from that which you’ve taught me
I won’t depart.
All the life lessons I learned from you
I’m putting them to practice too
Now I better understand
Why at times you disciplined me
So I could grow up
And be the man you wanted me to be
Undoubtedly this was your expression
Of true love to me
Thanks for both rejoicing in my present
And preparing me for my future
With tenderness me you did nurture
And the warrior within me you did mold
Now I can arise with confidence
And when necessary my children scold.
Your spirit and strength are within me
So I go forth boldly in victory
To be all that you would want me to be
To make the world a better place
Until I see your face!
